Vanessa Paradis still gets nervous around large crowds, though not as much as she once did. “It’s like, when I was arriving here,” she says, “everyone is sitting down and watching me.”

“Here” is Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc on the French Riviera, where Ernest Hemingway and, later, Elizabeth Taylor stayed. Here is where Karl Lagerfeld, for Chanel’s resort show  on May 9, has ordered Mediterranean blue chairs and patio tables with umbrellas in place of traditional runway seating, as seagulls (had he arranged for these, too?) circle overhead. Here, some 200 guests, ushered in by young men dressed as cabana boys, are gawking at Paradis as she finds her seat.

“I still lower my chin,” says Paradis, wearing a black silk lace Chanel jumpsuit. “But I don’t feel terrified the way I used to.”

The film, which was written and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee and   screened at September's Toronto Film Festival, consists of two suspenseful, psychological charged, musically intertwined love triangles: one between a man, his adored wife and his new soul mate and the other between a poor young mother, her Down syndrome child and his first crush.

Vallee -- who had Paradis high on his wish list of actresses, which included  Marion Cotillard, Audrey Tautou  and Charlotte Gainsbourg -- told Fash Track last week that Paradis wore absolutely no makeup for the entire film. To top it off, her gorgeous hair was dyed a mousey brown.

Of her deglamming, Paradis admits : "It was interesting for everyone to see me like that. It was not even in my mind that I'm going to look so ugly. i wasn't there to be glamorous, and that's what doing a movie is about, to step into someone else's life. It was about being this mom and doing a good job."

“People tried to seduce me with dough,” he recalls. “They offered me movies in which I’d kiss the girl and get in a fight. The money would have been nice but I felt that if I took it then, it would all be over in a few years because I’d be just like everybody else.

It has been a long and often bumpy road for the 48-year-old. One of the few actors in Hollywood who genuinely did not crave stardom, he has nevertheless become one of its most bankable.

“I decided to be patient and swore I would only do what I felt was right for me and, somehow, all these years later, I’m still here – so it worked.”

The star-making roles he turned down early in his career include Lestat in Interview With The Vampire (it went to Tom Cruise), Jack in Speed (Keanu Reeves) and the Brad Pitt role in Legends Of The Fall.

The offers began to roll in after he made his name in the 1986 TV series, 21 Jump Street.
