“Good evening London. It's good to be back.” announces the tall, hooded figure that stands centre stage. The Correspondents have returned to their hometown following a hectic tour schedule and Village Underground, formerly an eighteenth century theatre, seems a fitting venue for this dramatic live act to launch their new single.

Dressed in a black, velvet cloak and looking like the Scottish Widow, Mr. The vision is an exaggerated mesh of eras - 1930's meets the pantomime season - a monochrome mix of Lycra, tassels and buttons. The look is haunting. Chuckles takes to the decks and begins proceedings, easing us in with a gentle swing beat. Suddenly, with a burst of movement, Bruce becomes a whirling dervish of gangly limbs, spinning and kicking as he moves about the stage. Bruce's angular face and black-rimmed spectacles catch the light. He begins to remove his cloak, slowly hoisting it, teasing us as he declares “I haven’t felt this excited for a very long time.” He throws it to the floor to reveal his eccentric clobber. Bruce sings, his expressive face over-annunciating every vowel as he welcomes us and his introduction creates an air of anticipation. Chuckles lays down a forceful electro beat and Bruce begins to scat with the kind of skill that hasn’t been seen since Scatman John took to the charts in 1995. He punctuates his verbal flow with occasional leaps onto a moving treadmill for maximum impact.

In keeping with the electro-swing vibe, the place is decked out like a 1930s speakeasy. Behind the bar, shelves display old-fashioned liquor in a variety of flavours and punters are given free drinks vouchers in the guise of American Dollars. The gimmick is a successful crowd-pleaser and the prohibited booze provides the perfect lubrication for the sort of raucous dancing that is demanded of The Correspondents' audience.

The highlight is I Want, written by Tom Fletcher from McFly. It sounds a lot like his group and even has a Brian May-style overblown guitar solo.

Stole My Heart, an attempt at Calvin Harris-style electro pop, sounds like a dodgy reversion of Taio Cruz's Dynamite.

The X Factor band's new single, Gotta Be You, is sure to have teenage girls singing along into their hairbrushes, while One Thing was brewed in a Swedish pop factory by blokes behind hits for Britney, 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys.

The boys will need to grow their hair for the video to that one.

The title track is a possible single reminiscent of Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry who the lads namecheck in the lyrics.

Louis, Harry, Zayn, Liam and Niall's record Up All Night will be lapped up by their young fanbase.
