Both killers have a list of previous convictions for violence and were on bail when they killed Reamonn, Maxwell for stabbing another man three times in a knife attack and Smith for alleged assault and robbery and for allegedly having a pronged fork in his possession.

The pair are now expected to be sentenced in December.

The High Court in Glasgow on Monday was told a social worker had not been able to interview Smith.

However, the sentence has been deferred because social work reports for Smith were not available.

CAMPAIGNERS from the town of slain teenager Reamonn Gormley this week called for urgent action to tackle knife crime.

The Advertiser launched the Hammer The Knife Thugs campaign, calling for tougher sentences for people carrying and using knives after Glasgow University student Reamonn was stabbed to death on February 1.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill confirmed the move only a week after the Advertiser delivered an 11,000-strong ‘Hammer The Knife Thugs’ petition to the First Minister Alex Salmond.

The Blantyre-based Campaign for Change group were speaking after the Scottish Government announced their ‘No Knives, Better Lives’ project will be rolled out across South Lanarkshire and five other areas.

Mr Gormley had previously spent several months working for the Good Child Foundation in Thailand, a charity with strong links to Celtic that helps children with Down’s syndrome.

Celtic FC are to hold an event in memory of a student who was murdered for his mobile phone earlier this year.

Reamonn Gormley was killed by Daryn Maxwell, 23, and Barry Smith, 19, in Blantyre as he walked home from watching a Celtic game.

The 19-year-old Glasgow University student was repeatedly stabbed in the neck on February 1 this year after he refused to hand over his mobile phone and wallet to the pair.
