Writing-wise, I’ve been thinking (for reasons I’ll get to in a minute) about the music that authors listen to while they’re working. Often the same song over and over again: when it was Lou Bega’s 'Mambo No 5' his wife came upstairs and said ‘Steve, one more time – you die!’ That record doesn’t really fit King’s image, does it? Not in advance of working, for research purposes, as David Nicholls did when writing (for each chapter he played songs from the year in question, to remind himself what, say, 1994 felt like at the time). Stephen King listens to Metallica and Anthrax to help his novels achieve pace: ‘I don’t want to dawdle around and look at the scenery’. The horror writer Peter Straub, on the other hand, listens to classical music. I mean while you’re actually at the coalface, be that a computer, a typewriter or a notepad. Or rather he used to: he now needs quiet to concentrate, and only hits ‘play’ when he’s editing. Heavy metal is what you’d expect from him – just as Frank Skinner’s choice of music while writing his autobiography (Dr Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and the Notorious B.I.G.) suits him. Leipzig, 09.11.2011 (newsropa.de) - Da sitzt man nichtsahnend hinter der Bühne neben einem eleganten Herrn. Martin Weber ist heute noch einigermaßen fassungslos, dass er den Star nicht erkannt hat. „Wahrscheinlich“, sagt er, „lag es an meiner Aufregung“. Denn das passierte während einer seiner ersten Einsätze als Helfer der Bühnentechnik. Eine Durchsage, der Mann steht auf und steigt die Showtreppe hinab. Damals war er im ersten Lehrjahr seiner Ausbildung zur Fachkraft für Veranstaltungstechnik bei der Media City Atelier GmbH (MCA). Das war Lou Bega, der Mambo-König. Heute passiert ihm so etwas nicht mehr, heute ist er bei seinen Einsätzen unter professioneller Anspannung, das Lampenfieber hat ausgedient.
