George Michael: Eastenders gay storyline “scaring children”

The musician took to Twitter last night to tell followers the BBC drama was “scaring the shit out of children”.

George Michael heavily criticised the storyline between two gay character in the soap opera Eastenders.

“Insulting to the gay community, insulting to the Muslim community, and in the meantime, terrifying every gay child that is struggling to come to terms with their sexuality , and the prospect of coming out to their family, whatever their religion.

“So far, Christian has been beaten up 3 times that I can remember, and is now accused of child molestation. Sayed [sic] has been disowned and is now mistreating his partner shamelessly, presumably because he is now a confused bisexual after all.

He said “The relationship between Sayed [sic] and Christian is the most insulting piece of bullshit on British television right now.

George Michael sings for Sir Elton

Introducing his cover of the song at the Royal Opera House in London, he said: "This next song was written by someone I hope has made it in here already - Elton. It's a song he wrote in the late 70s and it's about an ageing pop star. Funny that."

As George cast his gaze around the audience, Sir Elton waved from the stalls, where he sat beside his civil partner David Furnish and broadcaster Janet Street Porter. Little Britain star David Walliams sat beside Janet with his wife Lara Stone.

Relations between George Michael and Sir Elton John were once so bad that George told Sir Elton to shut his mouth and stop interfering in his life.

At a special gig by the former Wham! singer to raise money for Aids charities, Michael told the star-studded audience he hoped the Idol singer was among them.

But any acrimony between the two pop stars was clearly behind them when George took to the stage to perform a cover of an Elton John song - while the artist himself watched from the audience.

George Michael, Royal Albert Hall

This was certainly an odd gig though. The second number of the night, Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares for Me", was a brisk, big-band run-through. The Police's "Roxanne" became a slightly sinister smoochy number. Often slow, but languid rather than pedestrian. Not everyone can get away with turning pop songs – his own plucked from his lengthy career and other people's, some he has previously recorded, some he hasn't – into dreamy jazz standards, but he mostly pulled it off. Rufus Wainwright's "Going to a Town" had a melancholy swing, while the Depression-era "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" had an inevitable contemporary resonance, even if it was being sung by a multimillionaire.

At 48 he should maybe keep the borderline dad-at-the-disco footwork to a minimum

Tour, his glittering musical pedigree was absolutely centre stage.
