Other possibilities: Marty Mornhinweg, age 48 Coach Heels Comment: He’s been the Eagles offensive coordinator since 2006, and Philadelphia never has finished below 11th in total offensive in that span. They’ve twice finished No. 2 in that category, including this season. Monhinweg has had success with several different quarterbacks, including a youngster in Kevin Kolb, who was drafted in 2007. Mornhinweg has plenty of ties to San Francisco having been the team’s offensive coordinator under Steve Mariucci from 1997-2000. His son, Skyler, is a quarterback at Stanford. Drawbacks: The 49ers will have to wait until the Eagles are out of the playoffs to interview him. He had a forgettable stint as Detroit’s head coach from 2001-2002. Pat Shurmur, age 45 coach outlet factory Comment: Almost everything written about Mornhinweg can be repeated about Shurmur. He was the Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2002 through 2008 before Steve Spagnuolo hired him two years ago to be the Rams offensive coordinator. Rookie quarterback Sam Bradford’s success this season reflects positively on Shurmur and makes him an interesting candidate for a team that expects to bring in a young quarterback this season. As an added bonus, hiring Shurmur would help the 49ers by weakening a division rival. Drawbacks: The Cleveland Browns have the jump on Shurmur. President Mike Holmgren is looking for a head coach whose well- versed in the West Coast offense and is meeting with Shurmur today. Brian Billick, age 56 coach bracelets Comment: He was a head coach for a successful team, the Baltimore Ravens, for nine years and he’s won a Super Bowl. Billick also has been an offensive coordinator, in Minnesota for five seasons, and he has ties to the 49ers: He was drafted in the 11th round in 1977 but never played. He later spent two years in the team’s PR department and has a great story about then owner Eddie DeBartolo. Unlike most of the candidates on the list, the 49ers would be able to move quickly with Billick. Drawbacks: Billick has been out of the game since 2007. Baltimore’s success under Billick was not due to its offense, and furthermore Billick could not develop a young quarterback in that span. Chris Redman was a third rounder in 2000; Kyle Boller was a first rounder in 2003. (Derek Anderson went in the sixth in ’05; Troy Smith in the fifth in ’07) coach sunglasses Brian Schottenheimer, age 37 Comment: He’s been the Jets’ offensive coordinator since 2006 and also has become well-versed in training a young quarterback, Mark Sanchez. The Jets’ offensive finished 11th in the league this season, although Sanchez finished 16 among starting quarterbacks in passing yards and had a middling 75.3 passer rating. Schottenheimer was the Redskins’ quarterbacks coach in 2001. The 49ers wouldn’t have to find a new special teams coach if Schottenheimer gets the job. Drawbacks: The Jets are in the playoffs; the New York offense has been just as stodgy as the 49ers’ units in recent years. Mike Mularkey, age 49 Comment: He’s been the Coach Jewelry Set Falcons offensive coordinator since 2008, a span that included the Falcons drafting Matt Ryan No. 1 No. 3 overall. Ryan finished ninth in passing yards this season and had a 91.1 passer rating as the Falcons finished with the best record in the NFC. Atlanta finished with the 16th best offense. Mularkey also has head-coaching experience having done so in Buffalo from 2004-2005. The Bills finished 9-7 in 2004, which is their last winning season Drawbacks: Mularkey’s Bills finished 5-11 in 2005 and the team finished 28th in total offense. The Falcons also are in the playoffs, and Mularkey already has been approached by the Browns and Broncos about their head-coach vacancies. Mike Heimerdinger, age 58 Comment: The 49ers interviewed Heimerdinger in 2005, and he finished second in that contest to Mike Nolan. Heimerdinger has been the Titans’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons and was their coordinator in the first half of last decade when Tennessee reached the Super Bowl. Steve McNair was the league’s co-MVP under Heimerdinger in 2003. Drawbacks: Heimerdinger was diagnosed with cancer in November. He is reportedly in remission and feeling fine, but his health would be a major concern to any future employer. Coach Necklaces Others: Jon Gruden once seemed like a sure fit in San Francisco, but both sides appear to have cooled on the other. Gruden seems content to remain in the television booth until the right opportunity presents itself. Jeff Fisher’s name continues to come up because Titans owner Bud Adams has yet to publicly support him as their head coach.
